The incorporation of advanced technologies is revolutionizing the field of traditional biological sciences. This has given rise to many new disciplines such as, nanotechnology, genetic engineering and synthetic biology. Industrial Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make useful products, or “any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use”. Thus, products obtained from the field of biotechnology have commercial applications. This technological advancement currently has revolutionized the way we think and solutions in healthcare, agriculture, animal husbandry, food industry and chemical industry and environmental solutions are being sought with biotechnological innovations.

Taking into cognizance the changing needs of the economy and to keep abreast with the latest developments in the field of biotechnology, it is imperative that the learner be updated with current trends. The syllabus of the Industrial Biotechnology Postgraduate Programme has been framed against the background of these considerations and aspirations of the learner to ensure a better contribution by them to this growing star industry of the 21st century.
